The YouthBuild board of directors spent Friday morning at the Sasha Bruce YouthBuild Program in a very poor section of Washington, D.C. For two hours, we listened to six recent graduates talk about their pasts, their futures and the transformations they experienced because of the program and the commitment of the staff.
While Ready by 21 helps communities implement collective impact strategies across all issues and age groups, those strategies can also be used to address specific issues in a community among specific groups of youth. Just look at Atlanta, where leaders have joined together in a broad-scale Ready by 21 initiative while also addressing individual areas of concern. We invited one of those leaders – Kim Nolte of the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential – to tell you about how collective impact is helping them progress on combating teen pregnancy.

While the start of each school year brings renewed commitments to improve learning, I'm especially excited this year to see a growing commitment among leaders around the country to expand learning beyond the classroom and beyond the traditional school day.

Late Friday, I heard the news that one of the Forum’s newest friends and board members, Bill Henningsgaard, died in an airplane accident with his son. Bill and Max were visiting colleges on the East Coast when the plane he was piloting crashed in East Haven, Conn.
