2014 Community Schools National Forum

April 9, 2014 - 7:30 am to April 11, 2014 - 12:30 pm
Event Host(s): Coalition for Community Schools

This April, the Coalition for Community Schools is partnering with Cincinnati Public Schools and the Community Learning Centers Institute for the 2014 National Forum "Opportunity for All: Community Schools, The Engine for Change."

This year’s theme reflects the Coalition's commitment to equal opportunity for all students and our belief that community schools, with their deep and sustained relationships between schools and community partners, are the “engine” that will prepare our young people, families, and communities, to live and work in the 21st century. We are seeking workshops that reflect the principles of community schools that are fundamental aspects of an equity strategy – deep community engagement and participation, strong youth, family and resident voice, shared accountability, building on community assets and strengths, and strong partnerships.

The goals for the National Forum are:

  1. Bring increased national attention to the community schools as a ground-level equity strategy, and a vehicle for achieving key national goals, and addressing the opportunity gap.
  2. Help bring greater visibility and understanding of community schools to policy makers, administrators, and the public, at the state and local level in Ohio. We are committed to helping set the stage for future state action.
  3. Improve practice in the planning, operations, and evaluation of community schools, as well as enhanced capacity among local and state leaders to build a scaled up system of community schools.  We have the technology to scale up and need to build the will.
  4. Deepen participant’s ability to implement various components of a community schools (e.g., early childhood, youth and family engagement, expanded learning opportunities, health, and social supports, etc.), and highlight activities that ensure the provision of quality supports and opportunities for young people, their families and communities.
