A Clarion Call for Education Renewal

The move for fundamental education reform is about to get a thoughtful and inspiring boost from a seasoned champion. Eric Schwarz, founder of Citizen Schools, has written a new book that boldly shows a way to success: The Opportunity Equation: How Citizen Teachers Are Combating the Achievement Gap in America's Schools.

Karen Pittman, CEO of the Forum for Youth Investment, has read the pre-publication excerpts and plans to read the book cover to cover upon its release next week. Her latest blog explains why she "can't wait for more": The book's title is perfect, the tone genuine, the scaffolding artful, the analysis spot-on and the conclusion bold. "Eric's clarion call," she writes, "is not for reform but rather for renewal."

Help Choose Panels at South By Southwest

Here's your chance to help shape a conference that aims to foster innovation in learning. The 2015 SXSWedu Conference (held in March in Austin, Texas) is taking votes on proposed panels, two of which feature the Forum and its Ready by 21 partners. Both workshops focus on the importance of using data and analytics to support youth as they get ready for college, work and life.

Read about the panels and give them a thumbs-up (on the left side of each page).

Using Data about Youth to Drive Action

Like most communities, yours probably can't answer questions about how students feel: Who would they turn to in times of trouble? Do they have enough energy to get through the day? Do they feel safe? Where do they see themselves in five years?

You can fill those gaps. The Forum for Youth Investment and its Ready by 21 partners are recruiting communities from around the country to join the third Ready Youth Learning Cohort, which is designed to use data from the Gallup Student Poll to ignite conversations that drive actions. Find out more about what Ready Youth is and how you can get involved.

Achieving Collective Impact: How Partnerships Change Community Outcomes

The Forum for Youth Investment and FSG are teaming up to help communities effectively carry out collective impact strategies. Join this three-day institute to learn how to create the five conditions for successful collective impact approaches through clear, sequenced steps: from partnership creation, community engagement, goal-setting and problem analysis to intervention design, implementation, evaluation and improvement. Participants will learn how to take a Big Picture Approach to tackle a range of issues in their communities, focusing on how to apply the nuts and bolts of collective impact strategies back home.
