Funding Brighter Futures Discussion Paper Released

News & resources from the Forum and the field about collaborative work to get young people ready by 21.
Federal and state investment in services for children and youth are flattening or declining, and cities and counties around the country are bearing the brunt of these trends. Increasingly, local leaders are taking matters into their own hands: financing children's programs and services locally by finding ways to more effectively leverage existing resources or to generate new revenues.
"Funding Brighter Futures: How Local Governments are Enhancing Investments in Kids" examines five communities doing innovative work to increase support for children's services. These five communities have established children's funds, bolstered by early efforts to engage the community, develop common outcomes and establish a coordinating body to oversee the funds. These communities represent some of the most compelling and complete examples of what it takes to find, align, generate and evaluate local children's funding.

This year's Ready by 21 National Meeting, March 29-31 in Austin, will provide ample opportunities to learn more about children's funding strategies, including:
  • Workshops on creating local children's cabinets, mapping federal funding, using data to make your public case and making strategic investments.  Review the agenda here
  •  The closing plenary session featuring successful strategists discussing how they have seized opportunities to advance strategic funding initiatives and responded to challenges.
  • A pre-meeting on March 29th that will explore examples, tools and strategic support available for local leaders to analyze funding sources, align funding, generate new local funding, and measure the outcomes of their investments.

Palm Beach County Youth Master Plan Featured in Youth Today
An alliance of Palm Beach County community leaders recently released the Palm Beach County Youth Master Plan, a blueprint for setting priorities and taking action to improve the lives of children and youth in the county.  Youth Today featured the plan in the most recent edition, reaching out to a number of local leaders to explore the process and the desired outcomes of the planning process that was guided by the Forum.
The goal of the master plan is to ensure that all Palm Beach County children and youth are:
  • born healthy,
  • attached to caregivers,
  • developmentally on track,
  • ready for school,
  • healthy and active,
  • meeting educational standards,
  • behaving prosocially,
  • connected and contributing,
  • career ready, and
  • graduating and in the workforce.
"It's to make sure we're planning better for kids in our community," said Tammy Fields, Palm Beach County youth services director.
