See the Nation's Newest Youth Master Plan

San Marcos, Texas, has adopted a child and youth master plan - laying the groundwork to significantly change the way it does business for young people. The Youth Master Plan, approved unanimously by the city council Tuesday, creates six "priority areas for action," including improving and increasing access to youth development opportunities, improving overall wellness and mental health, building supportive networks throughout the education lifecycle, and improving economic opportunities.

The city created the plan in partnership with the Forum for Youth Investment, which guided city leaders and residents in gathering and analyzing data about local young people, holding community conversations about the needs of youth, deciding on priorities based on the data and conversations, and creating strategies to address priorities. See the plan here.

Calling All Innovators

Does your afterschool program use data to improve services for kids? Then you have a chance to win.

The Afterschool Alliance and MetLife Foundation are seeking nominations for the 2013 MetLife Foundation Afterschool Innovator Awards. Nominees should be exemplary, lesser-known afterschool programs serving middle-school youth that showcase an innovation that takes place during the out-of-school time. Each of the five programs selected to receive the award will receive $10,000, be featured in the 2013-14 series of issue briefs and the Afterschool in Action Compendium, and will be offered the opportunity to present at national conferences.

Nominations in the following four categories must be received by Oct. 14:

1.     Keeping Kids Safe and Supported in the Hours After School

2.     The Role of Afterschool and the Common Core State Standards

3.     Students with Disabilities and Other Special Needs and Afterschool

4.     Why Data Matters: How Afterschool Programs Use Data to Improve Programming

More detailed instructions on the nomination process are available in the online nomination form.
