This was the result John Hughes, Summer Program Coordinator for the Seattle Public Schools, hoped for when he set out to cross-train summer school elementary teachers to deliver academic content using practices associated with quality out-of-school-time programs. Join us to hear more about John's vision for using summer school to demonstrate why attending to students' social, emotional and academic needs pays off and how teachers, students and the district have responded over time.

Social Belonging for Youth Success: Research and Promising Practices
A strong sense of social belonging means feeling valued and accepted by others. Social belonging has been linked to many aspects of success in school, career and adult life, including physical health, mental health, academic achievement and persistence.
 
The Forum recently hosted a webinar on social belonging, featuring staff from Education Northwest and highlighting the neuroscience of belonging and how it has been linked to positive outcomes among youth in diverse settings.
 
The American Camp Association has graciously written up two blogs on the session, mentioning how youth program staff, educators, counselors, and mentors can practice simple exercises to promote belonging in their settings.

Report from Washington State: Expanded Learning Opportunities Quality Initiative
In October, a report emphasizing the importance of Expanded Learning Opportunities was submitted to the Washington Legislature by the Washington State Department of Early Learning (DEL) and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). The report is the culmination of more than a year of research and coaching with 50 afterschool and summer learning programs across four counties in Washington State. It comes with support from several partners including the Raikes Foundation, School's Out Washington, the University of Washington and the Forum's Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality. The findings of the initiative contribute to the growing amount of evidence illustrating the positive effects that high-quality afterschool and summer learning programs have on young people. 
The Growing Out-of-School Time Field: Past, Present, and Future
The out-of-school time (OST) field has grown considerably over the last two decades. An exciting new book series, "Current Issues in Out-of-School Time," will lay out the frameworks, practice- and research-based knowledge and tools, and burgeoning paths to advance the field across multiple dimensions: demographic, stakeholder groups, contexts, systems and sectors, and disciplines.
 
The first book, "The Growing Out-of-School Time Field: Past, Present, and Future," sets the foundation by offering an analysis of the progress made since the 2000s, as well as by looking toward the future for areas of considerations. Leading OST experts, including the Forum's President & CEO Karen Pittman, explore the latest knowledge, intentionally bridging research and practice, and propose new areas of inquiry.

2018 Collective Impact Convening

The Collective Impact Forum, an initiative of FSG and the Aspen Institute Forum for Community Solutions, will be hosting its annual collective impact convening on April 3-5, 2018, in Austin, Texas. The 2018 Collective Impact Convening builds on the success of the 2017 convening in Boston that attracted more than 600 funders, backbone leaders and other collective impact community partners. The Forum is proud to be a co-catalyst partner in the Collective Impact Forum.
 
Highlights of the 2018 Collective Impact Convening include:
  • University of Houston Professor and bestselling author Brené Brown and Rainier Valley Corps CEO and nonprofit blogger Vu Le are among the confirmed keynote speakers
  • Case studies, how-to sessions, tool sessions, and one-on-one coaching on topics such as community engagement, equity, leadership, use of data, and sustainability
  • Short talks on successes and challenges in collective impact
  • Local site visits to explore collaborative social change in action in Austin
  • Opportunity to interact with a diverse audience of funders, backbone leaders, and other collective impact community partners from 30+ U.S. states and 15+ countries around the world
